Daniel James Garetz passed away unexpectedly at the age of 31.
He was born April 2, 1989 and graduated from Saint Louis Park High School in 2007. From early childhood he played baseball and softball, but his greatest love was hockey.
Dane wrote, “thank you for being my teammate, my assistant captain twenty years ago in Peewees, and for being my friend. I don’t keep many, and you were special.” Numerous childhood friends echoed these sentiments. Daniel was an out-door enthusiast who liked to bike, camp, hike and fish. Employed as a deckhand on the Mississippi, he envisioned a career as a tow boat captain. According to his employer, who wept when she learned of his death, “Danny was an exceptional crew member and was always pleasant to be around. His memory and positivity will be remembered forever as part of our river family.”
Daniel was creative, dedicated, kindhearted and genuine. He was beloved as a son and brother to families beyond our own.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Dr. Floyd Garetz, his uncle, Jonathan Garetz, his sister Amber Allen, and his cousin Katy Grant.
He is survived by his parents, Richard Garetz and Suzanne Suhr, step-father, Scott Suhr, his brother, Thomas Garetz and Tarina Gartner, (parents of niece Tailyn), grandmothers Sandra Heise and Diane Garetz, grandfather James Hames, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Due to current Covid regulations, a celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, May 23rd, 11am to 1pm. It will be located at the St. Louis Park Rec Center, ROC, to honor Daniel’s love of the out-of-doors. Food will be served if Covid regulations allow.
