Gregory Myre Obituary

Gregory Paul Myre (age 72) passed away on March 23, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Greg was born to Charles and Jane Myre on July 13, 1951.  He was raised in Richfield, Minnesota, and graduated from Richfield High School, where he was a three-sport athlete, and the University of Minnesota.  Greg was a proud United States Marine Corps veteran who served during the Vietnam War on the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43).  He famously dove off the aircraft carrier to rescue a military prisoner, for which he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal.  Greg enjoyed a long career as a federal law enforcement official, where he met his wife of 35 years, Pam.

Greg’s greatest pride and joy was his family.  He loved coaching, camping, and cooking with his kids.  He also took great pleasure in hosting family gatherings with huge, hearty meals.  Once he knew your favorite food, he always had it at a party.  For his grandkids, he notoriously kept candy in his pocket, ice cream in the freezer, and sweets in the pantry.  Greg and Pam always had over-the-top décor at Christmas and Halloween, including lights and blow-ups covering the yard and house, and giant candy bars for all trick-or-treaters.

Greg’s signature color was orange, and he wore it often: orange tank tops, shoes, swim trunks, sweatpants, a winter coat, hats, gloves, and more.  Even the envelopes he sent birthday cards in were orange.

Greg fought leukemia four times longer than doctors predicted.  He lived to the fullest on his own terms during the two years following his diagnosis.  Greg attended grandchildren’s concerts and sporting events, hosted parties, and slid down waterslides—always with a clever smile and a kind word of praise, especially for his grandkids.  “Remember, I love you, and I’m proud of you,” was his enduring message to his kids and grandkids.

Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Chuck and Jane Myre; son, Chad Myre; brother, Kip Myre; and sister, Jayne Anne Olson.  Greg is survived by his beloved wife, Pam; son, Shane (Gloria) Myre; daughter, Nicole (Erik) Nilsen; daughter, Codi (Brandon) Nundahl; step-son, Larry (Michelle) Gyger; and step-daughter, Tracey (Nathan) Blackbird.  Greg is also survived by brother, Rick (Theresa) Myre; grandchildren, Gabe, Macy, and Teddy Myre; Ethan, Kate, and Jack Nilsen; Lydia, Everly, and Axel Nundahl; step-grandchildren, Dakotah and Shyanne Gyger; Elsie, William, and Curtis Crezee; step-great-grandchildren, Stella Gyger; Brooks and Carolyn Hawbaker; and many beloved life-long friends.  He is missed beyond measure.

A celebration of life will be April 6th, at 11:00am, at Summit Funeral & Cremation, 6415 Carmen Ave., Inver Grove Heights.  Visitation one hour prior.  Burial following at Lebanon Cemetery in Apple Valley.  Summit Funeral and Cremation (651.361.9273).
