Theodore "Ted" Joseph Cummins

Our beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend,Theodore Joseph Cummins “Ted/Teddy/Theo,” age 28, of Maplewood, passed away surrounded by family on the afternoon of September 15, 2023 following a long battle with choriocarcinoma testicular cancer.

Ted was born on December 29, 1994 and grew up in Maplewood. He graduated from Roseville High School in 2013, college from UW River Falls in 2018, and received his Master’s degree from St. Mary’s in 2021.

Ted was a kind and compassionate human being who worked hard to make the world a better place. He saw the good in everyone and was passionate about teaching and coaching his Special Olympics team. Ted’s patience, understanding and joy made him a great and inspiring teacher, coach, and uncle to his nieces and nephew. He loved spending time with his mom and being a brother to his siblings. Ted enjoyed Minnesota sports teams (especially the Twins), reading books, being outside, playing games, going to breweries, and hanging out with friends.

Even after a devastating diagnosis and over a year and half of intensive treatments, Ted never stopped fighting. He stayed strong through it all and has finally found the peace he deserves. We are so grateful for Ted’s bravery and grace throughout his life. May his resilience, courage, and compassion continue to be a guiding light for us all.

Ted was preceded in death by his father, Dennis; grandparents Will and Ida Berthiaume; aunt Edie Lancaster; and cousin Tony Brown. Survived by his mother Jolie, brother Dennis (Brittani), brother Monroe, sister Staci (Zach), brother Charlie, nieces Aubrey and Josie, nephew Zac, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial gathering in Ted’s honor, in lieu of a traditional funeral, will be on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 from 4-8pm at Urban Growler (2325 Endicott Street, Saint Paul, MN 55114). All are welcome to come celebrate and remember Ted. Memorials in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Down Syndrome Association of MN or the University of Minnesota Cancer Research and Care.
